Straits Times E-Forum Reflection Week 2
Article: “Sharp rise in girls under 16 having sex” – Home Section
Q1: (a)State any two reasons mentioned in the article which contributes to the sharp rise in girls under 16 having sex. Answer: First reason that girls under 16 is engaging in sex is because they have a desire for a closer connection with their boyfriend. They feel that sex is the only way that they can keep the boy they love, and at the same time, giving them emotional support and fulfilment. Furthermore, perphaps they are following their friends to thrive on popular culture and fashion fads in order to get attention. Second reason is because they are being pressured by their boyfriend into giving themselves. They are compelled to give in to the demands of their partners so as to prove their love.
(b)What are some consequences which a girl might face for engaging in casual sex? Answer: Firstly, they may have unwanted babies because some of them may not use contraceptives. This will then lead them to having abortion, which may make pregnancy for them difficult in the future. Secondly, they may face the risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). They may also get contracted with Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) when having a abortion. Chlamydia is the most common infection in young girls,of the bacterial infection that often does not produce symptoms but can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and raise the risk of ectopic pregnancy and future infertility. Lastly, by engaging in sex with their boyfriend, even if they themselves are willing to do so, may cause their boyfriend to be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $10,000 for this crime.
Q2: What are some of your reactions after reading this article? If one day, a close friend of yours confess to you that he/she has been engaging in sex, what would your advice to him/her be? Answer: I feel very surprised that there was a sharp increase in girls under 16 having sex, nearly 45 percent more than the year before. I feel that they do not even respect themselves and did not think before they act. Perphaps they were compelled to have sex with their partners but they could always say no. Probably they did not want to say because they were afraid of losing their boyfriend. However, they were the ones who gets into more trouble than the boys would get. If they get pregnant, they would be the ones facing it. They may have to undergo abortion, which may lead to STIs.
If one day,a close friend of mine confess that he/she has been engaging in sex, I would try my very best to stop him/her from doing so, as it may destroy his/her future and the consequences that they will get into, such as contracting STD or STIs. However,I will not pester him/her until she promises not to do it because I think it makes no help and furthermore,it is their own responsibility. If he/she insist on doing so, I will respect them and not tell the teacher as that is his/her personal's affair. Soon, in the future, he/she will know the effects of engaging in sex, that will bring him/her no good. -DONE-Labels: ST reflection week 2
